Focal AI, co-founded in 2024 by John L. Connell and Jerry Bai, automates the full client lifecycle for Canadian financial advisors. The platform handles preparation, note-taking, task extraction, and data sync across 130-plus integrations. A Toronto data centre on Microsoft Azure supports PIPEDA and OPC compliance. Advisors at IPC, CI Financial, Financial Horizons, and Designed Wealth Management report reclaiming 15-plus hours each week.
Focal AI is an AI assistant built specifically for Canadian financial advisors, co-founded in 2024 by John L. Connell and Jerry Bai. Before a meeting, it generates agendas, client overviews, and personalized emails. During, it captures structured notes. After, it extracts tasks, drafts follow-ups, runs speaker analytics, and syncs data across 130-plus integrations, including auto-filling more than 400 Conquest fields. Advisors can also query past conversations on demand. Jason Pereira, senior partner at Woodgate Financial, which manages $280 million in assets under management, evaluated 14 competing tools before choosing Focal AI. "I have tried 14 AI note-takers. Focal is the only solution for advisors that has thought through advisor-specific workflows, compliance, and has a proactive AI roadmap," Pereira said.
Connell argues that general-purpose AI covers roughly a tenth of what a purpose-built platform does, even on basic functions like note-taking and task extraction. The gap widens in Canada because the software stack differs from the American one. U.S.-first platforms integrate with eMoney and MoneyGuidePro. Canadian advisors use Conquest, NaviPlan, and Snap Projections alongside separate CRM systems. American firms have little incentive to build deep automations for that stack, so every workflow gap compounds. Connell draws a hard line between fragmented adoption and genuine productivity: "In old-school software, a marketplace makes sense; let the vendors compete," he says. "But AI compounds, and five half-used tools without context on data compound to nothing."
Focal AI uses visible meeting bots that satisfy implied consent under Canadian privacy law. Botless providers that claim to begin recording only after consent is granted are, in practice, capturing audio before that consent is given, and the compliance risk lands on the advisor. Connell is specific about where exposure hides: "Watch for AI tools that send your clients' data to Claude or other third-party models, where it may be used to improve those models. Also, be cautious of bot-less note-taking solutions, which may expose advisors to consent-related compliance risk under PIPEDA." In December 2025, Focal AI opened a dedicated Canadian data centre in Toronto on Microsoft Azure, running stateless models so client data is never used for training.
Advisors using Focal AI report reclaiming more than 10 hours a week, which they redirect into more client conversations, sharper prospecting, and stronger conversion. The company's published figure is 15-plus hours weekly, the equivalent of nearly two full working days. A single meeting can consume close to an hour in pre-meeting prep alone, building agendas and personalized emails. After the conversation, more time disappears hand-keying data into PDFs, planning tools, and CRM systems. Connell describes where he focuses his energy, and by extension what the platform targets: "There are 10,000 things that have to be done, and 10 that will cause the fire to escalate. Those are the ones you aim the water hose at."
Focal AI delivers science-backed coaching through a data partnership with leaders in behavioural finance. After each meeting, the platform measures what an advisor said against what top producers do in the same moment, then returns personalized feedback drawn from more than 10,000 coaching assets. Connell likens the experience to having a best-in-class advisor present after every conversation. The reactions he finds most striking come from veterans: advisors with 30 years of experience who discovered they had been missing key retirement conversations or had never developed a consistent approach to beneficiary discussions. Advisors who start in the bottom quartile of their cohort and apply the coaching layer have climbed toward the top. Pereira cited Focal AI's proactive product roadmap as a clear differentiator after testing 14 competing tools.
Connell is skeptical of marketplace models that approve five or six AI tools simultaneously. That approach fragments data, multiplies due diligence and training costs, and leaves most of the available value unused. His position rests on a distinction between traditional software and AI: traditional tools deliver roughly static value regardless of how many you stack, while AI compounds on itself when it has full context across a workflow. Firms that go deep with one purpose-built partner, letting automation build across the entire client lifecycle, are the ones that pull ahead over time. Connell frames the contrast plainly: "In old-school software, a marketplace makes sense; let the vendors compete. But AI compounds, and five half-used tools without context on data compound to nothing."
In roughly two years, Focal AI has moved from founding to working with advisors across Manulife, IPC, CI Financial, Financial Horizons, and Designed Wealth Management, firms that together manage billions of dollars through the platform. The company earned a Wealth Professional Awards finalist nod for Service Provider of the Year and a main-stage finalist spot at Future Proof. Connell's background includes time at Microsoft, a video-conferencing startup later acquired by Dialpad, and a venture firm investing across AI and enterprise software. As the first business hire at his previous company, he helped raise more than $36 million while serving clients including Microsoft, Nintendo, Amazon, and Activision Blizzard. Pereira, who tested 14 tools, called Focal AI's proactive roadmap a genuine differentiator.
